Music is the essence of life. There are two types of classical music prevalent in India, the "Karnatak" music which is prevalent in Southern parts of India i.e. Tamilnadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and the "Hindustani Music" gained prevalence in eastern, western and northern parts of India. Basic rules of the two streams however, are common. Both have recognized seven notes and twenty two shrutis (subtle pitching of each note). Essential elements of raag and tala are important components in both styles.
Raga occupies a very important place in Indian Music. This unique aspect makes our music different from all other music systems of the world. A specific melodious composition of swaras (notes) is called Raag. Specific means, definite or fixed and in Indian classical music one cannot use notes other than fixed or predetermined ones. There are different Raga for definite expressions of sentiments and feelings. All ragas have a specific time at which they are sung as per tradition.
There are many forms of Indian Music as - Dhrupad, Dhamar, Khayal, Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti, Kajri, Jhoola, Tappa, Bhajan, Folk, Ghazal, Geet etc. All these forms are centered on raga. All these forms are presented through ' Bandish ' or composition.
