2nd to 4th May 2011                         SESSION FOR YOGA COURSE REVISION OF YOGA

From 2-4 May, 2011 Ms. Suchint Kaur Sodhi, Yoga Teacher, ICC conducted a 3-day programme to revise the complete Yoga syllabus. All Yoga practices were demonstrated and theory topics were given in brief. The above session was conducted for ICC students to prepare themselves for assessment test programme at Yoga Hall ICC. About 100 students attended this programme.    




Thursday 5th May 2011               'WHO IS THE SERMONIZER OF GITA' (A LECTURE)                                                                              
 
In collaboration with Brahma Kumaris, Raja Yoga Centre, Suriname, a lecture on "Who is the sermonizer of the Gita" was organized on Thursday, 5th May 2011 at Indian Cultural Centre, Yoga Hall. President, Hindi Parishad Suriname, Mr. Bholanath Narayan, Dr. Dharma and other distinguished guests and around 150 devotees of Brahma Kumaris along with the local invitees of ICC were present.

The programme started with Brahma Kumaris power point presentation. Sister Meera Nagananda from India gave lecture on "Who is the sermonizer of the Gita" in English and Sister Loes Benmme, has translated it in Dutch.  Sister Nagananda shared her valuable thoughts with the audience, which was indeed very useful and informative. Saturday 7th May 2011          OPENING CEREMONY OF RABINDRANATH TAGORE'S ART-EXHIBITION

Indian Cultural Centre, Embassy of India, Paramaribo is celebrating the 150th Birth Anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore with activities around the year. In collaboration with Department of Culture of Suriname, Art Vibes United, Alhamax Academy & Schrijversgroep '77, a week long Art Exhibition "TAGORE" was   held on 7th May, 2011 at Fort Zeelandia (one of the historic place) Paramaribo, Suriname, which was inaugurated by Her Excellency, First Lady of the Republic of Suriname, Mrs. Ingrid Bouterse-Waldring.   Finance Minister of the Republic of Suriname, Mrs. Wonnie Boedhoe, Ex Home Minister, Mr. Hassankhan, Ambassador of the United States of America Mr. John Nay and Charge d'Affaires of Venezuela, Mrs. Thaes Romero Ferrer and a large number of distinguished guests were present on the occasion.

A cultural programme was also organized on this occasion. One of the main attractions of the cultural event was recitation of extracts from Gitanjali by the AlphaMax Academy students led by Director, Sean F. Taylor.  It was wonderful to watch Gitanjali being recited by Surinamese students, many of whom were non-Indians. It was a big attraction for the audience. The other attraction of the evening was Kathak dance performance based on Rabindra Sangeet by Kathak dance teacher of Indian Cultural Centre, Paramaribo, Miss. Namrta Rai.  The vocal music based on Rabindra Sangeet was presented by the students of vocal music  at the  Indian Cultural Centre. Audience appreciated and enjoyed the whole event.

This was the official opening programme of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore 150th Birth Anniversary. Media people of different TV channels and newspapers captured the event and telecasted. Following are some photographs and newspaper cutting:  






Sunday 8th May 2011     PROJECTION OF FEATURE FILM ON SATYAJI RAY'S   'KABULI WALA'

A documentary film on "Tagore's Life and Works" featured by Satyajit Ray and the Bangla movie "Kabuli Wala" with English subtitles, written by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore was projected at IAS (International Academy of Suriname) Paramaribo.  



Monday 9th May 2011        WRITING AND ART COMPETITION  ON RABINDRANATH TAGORE

A National School creative writing and Art Competition was organized at Suriname in which essays/paintings related to Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore were invited on the occasion of his 150th birth anniversary from all over Suriname. To promote the interest of creative writing and art/painting among the new generation of Suriname above event was organized.  The last date for receipt of the entries is 30 June, 2011.  

Thursday 12th May 2011       INDIAN CULTURAL PRESENTATION
                                                                                                   

As a tribute to Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, a cultural programme was organized in collaboration with Department of Culture and AlphaMax Academy at Cultural Centre of Suriname's auditorium, Paramaribo. Miss Namrta Rai, Kathak dance teacher, Indian Cultural Centre gave a wonderful Kathak performance and explained to the audience the nuances of Kathak.  The spouse of Foreign Minister Ms. Kamla Lackin was amongst the distinguished guests and  invitees who were present on this occasion and they appreciated the event. Mr. Sean F. Taylor, Director, AlphaMax Academy and their students recited Gitanjali.

Fridays 13th & 27th May 2011        TALK ON AYODHYA KAND RAMAYANA

A talk on Ayodhya Kand Ramayana was delivered by Dr. S.K. Jha, Hindi Teacher ICC. Around 25 students and Pandits attended the programme which included recitation of Hanuman Chalisa, Chaupaiyan's, Ram Bhajans and Dohas, short stories on moral values, etc. The topic of Ram-Bharat Milan at Chitrakoot is going on; this is the best example of brotherhood in Indian culture. Poetic pronunciations of Shlokas (mantra) were also taught to the students.        


Wednesday 18th May 2011          INDIAN COOKERY CLASS (Idly and Peanut Chutney)

A demonstration of an Indian dish 'Idly and Peanut Chutney' was given at the monthly cookery class organized at the Indian Cultural Centre. Around 40 local ladies attended the class and appreciated the preparation. The recipe and method of preparation were explained and after that dish was served to all the invitees.


Friday & Saturday 20th & 21st May 2011             'INDIAN RHYTHM'

In collaboration with Satrangi Dance School, Six Kathak Dance students of ICC, Paramaribo gave two performances and performed Shiv Vandana, composed by Pt. Birju Maharaj at the annual function "Indian Rhythms" of Ms. Sadhna Mohan's Satrangi Dance School, which was celebrated for two days 20th and 21st May at Theatre Thalia, Paramaribo.

Friday 20th May 2011                                 'SUMITRA NANDAN PANT JAYANTI'   

The Hindi section of Indian Cultural Centre, Paramaribo organized Mahakavi Sumitra Nandan Pant's 111th Jayanti on 20th May 2011 at Yoga Hall, ICC. 'Vyaktitva' and 'Krititva' of Pant Ji has been remembered and few poetry of Pant Ji were recited by the Hindi students.

Some renowned Hindi learned Dr. Naraindatt Gangarampanday, Shri Bholanath Narain the president of Hindi Parishad Suriname and other Hindi scholars presented their view on this occasion. Dr. S.K. Jha, Hindi Teacher of ICC described the various phase of his fifty year's poetic journey as a great contribution and different aspects. A Hindi short play was also presented by local Hindi students of Suriname. Following are some photographs:  


Tuesday 24th May 2011         'STORY TELLING SESSION AT CHILDREN'S BOOK FESTIVAL'   
Indian Cultural Centre, Embassy of India, Paramaribo organized a Story-telling session at the Children Book Festival at Suriname Chamber of Commerce and Industry KKF on 24th May 2011. Ms Namrata Rai, Dance teacher, ICC narrated a story from Panchtantra - "An Unfaithful Crocodile" to the children. Ambassador of India, Mr KJS Sodhi presented Indian storybooks to the Nationale Stichting Kinder boeken festival, Suriname, 2011. Director, ICC was also present on the occasion.



Thursday 26th May 2011                    YOGA LECTURE ON CONCEPT OF DIET (FOOD)                                       
 
Ms. Suchint Kaur Sodhi, Yoga Teacher, ICC conducted lecture on food for the junior batch students. Fifty-five students have attended the lecture. She explained three different effects of food on body and mind (Tamsik, Rajsik & Satvik). Food is the main component to the health that is why it has a great significance in Yoga. Balanced diet was explained in terms of Growth of body, Energy for body, Compensate wear & tear of body and to Make energy reserve for emergency.   


Thursday 26th May 2011        YOGA SESSION AT YOGA NIKETAN CENTRE                                     

A Yoga lecture cum Session was conducted at Yoga Niketan Centre, Paramaribo by ICC Yoga teacher Miss. Suchint Kaur Sodhi, for one hour from 6.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. wherein 50 students participated. In this session various Yoga practices like Kapalbhati, Crocodile variations, Surya Namaskar, Cobra Pose, Vakrasana, Gaumukh Asana, Uttan Manduk Asan and the basic breathing techniques were explained along with warming and stretching practices. One lecture was also given on lifestyle.


Friday 27th May 2011               MEDITATION SESSION FOR JUNIOR STUDENTS                                      

Ms. Suchint Kaur Sodhi, Yoga Teacher, ICC conducted a meditation session at Yoga hall, Indian Cultural Centre, Paramaribo for junior batch students. Seventy five students attended the above session. In this session Tratak (one pointed ness technique candle concentration technique was introduced). After that there was mantra recitation which helps the people to calm the mind. Saturday 28th May 2011         KINDER BOEKEN FESTIVAL                                      
 
   Director, ICC participated at Kinder Boeken Festival on a presentation of Book and attended their children cultural programme at KKF.  The organisers presented the books released to the Director, ICC.
