Kathak

Kathak is the most popular highly styled classical dance form of Uttar Pradesh. It was boon and nursed in temples but later flourished in princely courts.

Kathak derives its name from the word ' Katha ' or story telling. The story tellers in temples used to interpret incidents from Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranas with gestures & Music. The term Kathak is explained as "Katha Kahe so Kathak kahaye." Kathak is endowed with all three aspects viz. Nritta(pure dance), Nritya(representational items) & Natya(dramas) and over and above all this, the predominant feature is spirituality.

Kathak is the only classical dance of India which has links with muslim Culture. It represents a glorious fusion of Hindu & Muslim genius in Arts.
