Friday 3rd June 2011                                               PRESS MEET
                                                      (FOR 14-MEMBER BIHU DANCE GROUP FROM ASSAM)


   14-member Bhiu Dance Group from Assam led by Mr. Siba Prasad Das visited Suriname on on the occasion of 138th Indian Arrival Day in Suriname from 2 - 8 June 2011, and gave six full performances at different places in Suriname.  The group interacted with members of print and audio-visual media at the Press Meet organized at Yoga Hall, Indian Cultural Centre, on 3 June 2011 at 11.30 hrs. H.E. Ambassador of India, Shri KJS Sodhi, Mr. Jan Soebhag, Secretary (CUS), Mrs. Mary Gafoerkhan, President, Suriname International Ladies Association (SILA) and Mr. Shiba Prasad Das, Leader of the group were among others who attended the Press Meet. Immediately after the conclusion of the question answer session, a short presentation of their performance was made. The Press Meet was followed by lunch. The local sponsors of the troupe were Department of Culture of Suriname, Cultural Union of Suriname (CUS), Suriname International Ladies Association (SILA), Nationale Stichting Hindoestaanse Immigratie (NSHI) and Shri Sanatan Dharma Paramaribo (SSDP).       




Friday 3rd June 2011                                          FIRST CULTURAL PERFORMANCE
                                                            (BY 14-MEMBER BIHU DANCE GROUP FROM ASSAM)
First performance of the group was held at Shanti Bhawan, Welgedacht A Weg, (Santo Boma), tov. Politie Post, Wanica, a neighboring District about 25 kms. from Paramaribo, on Friday 3 June, 2011 from 2000 hrs to 2130 hrs. Mr. Radjkoemar Randjitsingh, Member of Parliament hosted the show. There was a gathering of around 600 people at the programme and the performance was much appreciated by the gathering. Following are some photographs:


Saturday 4th June 2011         UNVEILING CEREMONY OF RABINDRANATH TAGORE'S BUST  
                                   (A SHORT PERFORMANCE BY 14-MEMBER BIHU DANCE GROUP FROM ASSAM)

To celebrate 150th Birth Anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, Indian Council for Cultural Relations, New Delhi gifted a 42" Bust to AlphaMax Academy. Installation and unveiling ceremony of Rabindranath Tagore's Bust was held on the lawns of school on Saturday 4 June 2011 at 09.30 to 11.30 hrs. at AlphaMax Academy.  First Lady of Suriname, Mrs. Ingrid Bouterse-Waldring and H.E. Ambassador of India, Shri K.J.S. Sodhi unveiled the bust.  Bihu Dance Group gave a performance on the occasion. The Vocal Music Teacher, ICC, also rendered a song of Rabindranath Tagore. The great attraction of this cultural event was recitation of Gitanjali by the students headed by the Director, Sean F. Taylor, of AlphaMax Academy, Paramaribo - Suriname. It was wonderful to notice that Gitanjali was recited by creoles (non-Indian), and was presented by them with full postures and emotions. It was a big attraction for the audience. There was an audience of more than 500 people including the Vice President of Suriname HE Mr. Robert Ameerali and his spouse at the venue, everyone present enjoyed the programme. Saturday 4th June 2011                               YOGA SESSION FOR DIABETIC PATIENTS

Ms. Suchint Kaur Sodhi, Yoga teacher, ICC visited Lands hospital to give Yoga session's on 4th June, 2011 for the kidney dialyses centre. The hospital authorities invited the yoga teacher to educate everyone on health awareness day. She explained how Yoga helps to manage the stress and control diabetes. Thirty-five patients attended the session.

The second performance of the group was held on Saturday 4, June 2011 at 2100 to 2230 hrs. at Lallarookh Gebrouw, Lallarookhweg, Paramaribo, as Sangeet Ki Raat, which was sponsored by the Mr. Faried Ketwaru, President, NSHI, There was an audience of more than 1200 people at the venue and programme was enjoyed by everyone and the event covered by the Electronic Media.. Sunday 5th June 2011                                      THIRD CULTURAL PERFORMANCE
                                                               (BY 14-MEMBER BIHU DANCE GROUP FROM ASSAM)
               
Third performance of the group was held at SSDP Mandir, Blauwgrond, Paramaribo - Noord on Sunday, 5th June, 2011 at 1330 hrs to 1445 hrs. The programme was specially organized for the local people of the area. Mr. Ashwin Adhin, Chairman, CUS, Mr. Bhagwan Gangaram Pandey, President OHM, Ms. Sonia Quintus Bosch, a social worker and other local Pandits and Maulvis were among those present at the performance at SSDP Mandir, Paramaribo. Sunday 5th June 2011                                  FOURTH CULTURAL PERFORMANCE
                                                               (BY 14-MEMBER BIHU DANCE GROUP FROM ASSAM)
           
The commemoration of 138th anniversary of Hindoestani Immigration was held on Sunday 5th June, 2011 at the Baba & Mai Statue. A number of dignitaries including H.E. Minister for Home Affairs, H.E. Minister for Finance, H.E. Mr. KJS Sodhi, Ambassador of India and Madam Mrs. Sodhi, Mr. Maurits Hassankhan, former Minister of Home Affairs, Ms. Quintus Bosch (Nani), social worker, Chairman, Cultural Union Suriname, Mr. Ashwin Adhin, Chairman, OHM, Mr.Bhagwan Gangarampanday and other member of Cultural Union Suriname (CUS) were among those who garlanded the statue.  Bihu Group gave here the fourth performance on the occasion.  There was an attendance of more than 700 local people and schoolchildren at the venue, as a mark of respect; the Print / Electronic Media covered the event. Monday 6th June 2011                                      FIFTH CULTURAL PERFORMANCE

Fifth performance of the group was held at Sitaram Mandir, Groningen, Saramacca, a neighbouring District about 25 kms from Paramaribo, on Monday, 6th November, 2011 at 2000 hrs to 2130 hrs. Beside the Dist. Commissioner, Saramacca, Mrs. Roline T Samsoedien, Mr. Chotkan, Businessman and a number of distinguished guests were present at the performance at Saramacca. There was a gathering of around 500 people at the programme and the performance was much appreciated by the gathering. Following are some photographs:



Monday, 6th  June, 2011                                     LECTURE ON INDIAN IMMIGRATION
Well known historian Mrs. Leela Gajodher Sarup from Mauritius visited Suriname from June 6-10, 2011 to coincide with the celebrations of 138th Immigration Day in Suriname. She is recognized by the International Diaspora community for her close to two decades of continuous and dedicated intensive historic research into the Colonial Emigration Systems of Indian Indentureship. Mrs. Sarup gave a public lecture on Indian Immigration on 6th June, 2011 at the Lallarokh Complex and also introduced her works.  A set of her publications was also presented to the University of Suriname.  

Tuesday 7th June 2011                                  SIXTH CULTURAL PERFORMANCE
                                                               (BY 14-MEMBER BIHU DANCE GROUP FROM ASSAM)
               Sixth performance of the group was held on Tuesday 7th June 2011 at 1900 to 2030 hrs at Mata Gauri Foundation, Rijwegnaar Kwattaweg. Chairperson, Mata Gauri Foundation, Mr. Khusial, Ms. Sonia Quintus Bosch, social worker, Member of Cultural Union Suriname and well-known business persons of the city were among the distinguished guests at the performance. There was an audience of more than 600 people at the venue and everyone enjoyed programme, and the Electronic Media covered the event. Following are some photographs:

The main artists of the group also gave a half an hour performance at each channel i.e. SKY TV, RBN TV, Radio Radika, Apinitie TV & Trishul TV, which was followed by interview on 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and  7th June, 2011 respectively at their studios. The edited versions of the performance and interviews were telecasted through local television the following day for more viewer ship amongst the people of Suriname.

                                                           INTERACTION WITH ICC STUDENTS
                                            (BY 14-MEMBER BIHU DANCE GROUP FROM ASSAM)

The group had a Workshop/Interaction at ICC on Saturday 4th & 8th June 2011 at Yoga Hall, ICC, which was attended by around 150 ICC students.  During the Workshop, group performed few items of Bihu Dance and leader of the group and other member of the group interacted with ICC students. Question / answers session was held thereafter.  The duration of the Workshop was one hour. Following are some photographs:      


7th & 8th June 2011                      MEDITATION AND QUESTION & ANSWER SESSION

Ms. Suchint Kaur Sodhi, Yoga teacher, conducted a meditation session, which was followed by question answer session in which students cleared their doubts related to Yoga practices and they were guided on the assessment programme scheduled for the last week of June 2011.           
  
        Fridays 10th & 24th June 2011                                 TALK ON AYODHYA KAND RAMAYANA


Dr. S.K. Jha, Hindi Teacher ICC, delivered a talk on Ayodhya Kand Ramayana. Around 35 students and Pandits attended the programme, which included recitation of Hanuman Chalisa, Chaupaiyan's, Ram Bhajans and Dohas, short stories on moral values, etc. The topic of Ram-Bharat Milan at Chitrakoot is going on; this is the best example of unity in Indian culture. Poetic pronunciations of Shlokas (mantra) were also taught to the students.
 


 Wednesday 15th June 2011                                                  PRESS MEET
                                               (FOR 15-MEMBER BHANGRA AND GIDDA DANCE GROUP FROM PUNJAB)

Indian Cultural Centre, Embassy of India, Paramaribo received second Cultural Troupe, a 15-members Bhangra & Gidda group "Naksh Virsa Punjab da Bhangra" led by Shri Sandeep Sharma and accompanied by Shri Anurag Singh as Liaison Officer, they visited Suriname from 15 -18, June, 2011 and gave three full performances at different places in Suriname on the occasion of 138th Indian Arrival Day.

The group interacted with members of print and audio-visual media at the Press Meet organized by the Indian Cultural Centre, Paramaribo on Wednesday 15 June 2011 at 12.00 hrs. The Ambassador of India, Shri KJS Sodhi, Mr. John Parsadi, Advisor, Cultural Union Suriname (CUS), Mrs. Marry Ghafoerkhan, Suriname International Ladies Association (SILA), Mr. Bhagwan Gangarampanday, Chairman, Organisatie Hindoe Media (OHM), Mr. Faried Ketwaru, President, Nationale Stichting Hindoestaanse Immigratie (NSHI), print media and electronic media, attended the Press Meet among others. Mr. Parsadi, Cultural Union Suriname (CUS) thanked the Embassy of India and ICCR for sponsoring the visit of this Group to Suriname. After the conclusion of the question-answer session, the group gave short performances of Punjabi Bhangra and played Instrumental music of Punjab. The Press Meet was followed by lunch. The local sponsors of the troupe were Department of Culture in Suriname, Cultural Union Suriname (CUS), Suriname international Ladies Association (SILA) and Stichting Vrienden Van Commewijne (SVVC). Monday 13th June 2011                                                             TALK ON HEALTH & FOOD
  
       Ms. Suchint Kaur Sodhi, Yoga teacher, ICC delivered a lecture on health & food at Sita Ram Mandir, Kwatta, on 13th June, 2011 for promoting health awareness and the role of food in health, balanced diet, Yogic Diet and the three effects of the food on body and mind were described. In addition, she explained which food should be taken in different seasons and importance of nutritious food to the body.  Around 50 people attended the lecture. One of the senior students of Yoga is taking classes in this temple.   
   

Wednesday 15th June 2011                                               INDIAN COOKERY CLASS
                                                                              ('YOGHURT AS A DESSERT (Shri Khand)

A demonstration of an Indian dish 'Yoghurt as a dessert - (Shri Khand)' was given at the monthly cookery class organized at the Indian Cultural Centre. Around 25 local women attended the class and appreciated the preparation. The recipe and method of preparation were explained and after that the dish was served to all the invitees.  First performance of the group was held at Congress Hall, Paramaribo a very prestige's place in Suriname on Wednesday 15th June 2011 from 2000 hrs to 2130 hrs. H.E. Ambassador of India, Shri KJS Sodhi, Madam Mrs. Sodhi, Her Excellency Ambassador of Guyana, Ms. Merlin Udho, and member of diplomatic corps, Advisor, Ministry of Home Affairs, Mrs. Marry Ghafoerkhan, President, SILA and other members of Cultural Union Suriname (CUS) Suriname International Ladies Association (SILA), Organisatie Hindoe Media (OHM) and the distinguished guests were present at the performance at Congress Hall. Thursday 16th June 2011                                            PRESS MEET
                                             (FOR SR. HINDI PROFESSIOR VIMLESH KANTI VERMA ROM INDIA)

Indian Council for Cultural Relations, New Delhi sponsored the visit of Dr. Vimlesh Kanti Verma a Linguist, researcher, scholar and a respected teacher of Hindi and Indology to Suriname for a period of 10 days. Professor Vimlesh Kanti Verma interacted with members of print and audio-visual media at the Press Meet organized by the Indian Cultural Centre, Paramaribo on Thursday 16th June 2011 at 11.00 hrs. The Ambassador of India, Shri KJS Sodhi, Organisatie Hindoe Media (OHM), Mr. Bholanath Narain, Chairman Hindi Parishad Suriname, Mr. Ashwin Adhin, Chairman attended the Press Meet among others; Cultural Union Suriname (CUS) print media and electronic media. H.E. Ambassador of India, Shri KJS Sodhi explained to the media about his visit to Suriname. A series of Seminars and workshops have been organized at Paramaribo, Commewijne, Saramacca, Wanica and Nickerie in collaboration with Suriname Hindi Parishad, Suriname Sahitya Mitra Sanstha and CUS. INTERACTION WITH ICC STUDENTS

Saturday 18th June 2011                             TEACHING HINDI AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
                                                                                              HINDI KAL AUR AAJ

    A lecture was delivered on the topic of "Hindi Kal Aur Aaj" teaching Hindi as a foreign language by at Yoga hall, Indian Cultural Centre, Paramaribo by Prof. Vimlesh Kanti Verma. In this workshop, he asserted that Hindi is the second speaking language in the world and day by day the number of its speaker are increasing. He described various forms of Hindi in foreign countries like in Africa - Netali Hindi, in Suriname - Sarnami Hindi, in Fiji - Fijian Hindi, in Mauritius - Bhojpuri Hindi and so on. The Hindi scholars of Suriname explained about the role of different organizations in Suriname in the development/growth of Hindi at local level like Pt. B. Patandin expressed his views regarding role of Sanatan Dharam Maha Sabha in growth and establishment of Hindi, Pt. Tilakdhari expressed the view regarding role of Arya Samaj in the growth and establishment of Hindi and Mr. Bholanath Narain described the role of Suriname Hindi Parishad regarding Hindi activities in Suriname. 20th to 23rd June 2011                                       SELF ASSESSMENT YOGA CLASS PROGRAMME
  
Ms. Suchint Kaur Sodhi, Yoga teacher, conducted senior student's exams (self-assessment programme at practical and theory level. 90 persons had appeared in the exams). All the students have shown good response and they have shared written experience where they have mentioned one year Yoga classes programme was very beneficial, they have also mentioned in many day to day problems like backache, migraine, lack of sleep (Insomnia), high blood pressure were cured and they have also mentioned the lectures and workshop programme were very informative also improvements in health.   



Tuesday 21st June 2011                  SEMINAR: DEVELOPMENT OF SURINAMESE IT'S LITERATURE
                                                                         AND CONTRIBUTION IN STRENTHENING HINDI

A seminar on the topic 'Development of Sarnami-Hindi' was organized at Suriname Hindi Parishad, Paramaribo. In above discussion Prof. Vimlesh Kanti Verma, the renowned Hindi scholar from India describes the linguistic situation of Sarnami and its similarities and differences with Hindi. He asserted that in Sarnami Hindi there are 70% Avadhi words, 20% Maghahi words and 10% of Bhojpuri words are in reaching the language of Sarnami Hindi. Some local Hindi scholar and members of Suriname Hindi Parishad in which they discussed the features and future of Sarnami Hindi made a good discussion on the above-mentioned topic. The local Hindi scholars expressed their thanks to the Embassy of India/Indian Cultural Centre for the great contribution/help for the development of Hindi in this country. Around 70 people attended above programme.

Wednesday 22nd June 2011                     INTERACTION PROGRAMME WITH HINDI STUDENTS  

An interaction programme with the Hindi students of Parichay, Kovid, Ratna and local Hindi teachers with Prof. Vimlesh Kanti Verma the renowned Hindi scholar from University of Delhi, India at Hindi room, Indian Cultural Centre, Paramaribo was conducted on Wesnesday 22nd June 2011. In which the focus was on use of dictionary, reading and pronunciation have been discussed. In above discussion Prof. Verma describes some special features of Hindi Viyakaran (Grammar) and its terminology. The participants shared their problems with Prof. Verma and he provided solutions of their problems regarding their Hindi language difficulties. The participants appreciated very well this programme and conveyed their thanks for such type of programme to Embassy of India/Indian Cultural Centre. Around 50 local Hindi students/teachers participated in this programme.

Wednesday 22nd June 2011                          LECTURE ON OFFICIAL LANUGAGE POLICY

A lecture on the topic 'Official Language Policy' was delivered by Prof. Vimlesh Kanti Verma the renowned Hindi scholar and linguist from University of Delhi, India at Guest House, University of Suriname, Paramaribo. In this lecture, he described the Indian situation regarding to decide the official language policy in India. Prof. Verma describes why Hindi has been accepted as official and national language of India. This discussion was very relevant at Suriname because in Suriname more or less diversity we are getting. A number of prominent Surinamese intellectuals including the Minister of Home Affairs, Chairman of the University of Suriname were among the audience.  Following are the photographs:          



Thursday 23rd June 2011                                 LECTURE ON REVELANCE OF RAMAYANA  

Prof. Vimlesh Kanti Verma the renowned Hindi scholar and linguist from University of Delhi, India at Mata Gauri Centre, Paramaribo, delivered a lecture on the topic of 'Relevance of Ramayana'. In this lecture, he describes the various aspects and significance of Ramcharit Manas at present scenario and its symbolism. He further asserted that Ramayana presents the role model of Indian culture and society so that it is described as a symbol of Maryada. A short cultural programme followed by this lecture was presented in which Ram Stuti by the vocal music students of ICC was also presented sang at above occasion. Dr. Verma also presented children's storybooks written by his wife Mrs. Dheera Verma on this occasion to H.E.  Ambassador of India Shri KJS Sodhi and Ambassador presented those books to Director, ICC.


Saturday 25th June 2011                                                      ANNUAL YOGA FUNCTION DAY

Ms. Suchint Kaur Sodhi, Yoga teacher, conducted One Year Activity Presentation Function on Saturday 25th June, 2011. H.E. Ambassador of India, Shri K.J.S. Sodhi, Her Excellency Ambassador of Guyana, Ms. Merlin Udho and other distinguished guest were also present on the occasion.  In this programme, she explained how Yoga class activity was done. The Class style was Traditional Hatha Yoga for holistic living; with three (3) components of learning

Four ICC Yoga students have given a talk on different topics, a 15 minute Yoga demonstration were also shown by the students, then Yoga Teacher declared the performance of a self- assessment results. Famous singer of Suriname also sang a bhajan on the occasion.  160 persons have attended this programme, which was appreciated by everyone. Following are some photographs:    


Saturday 25th June 2011                                                      HINDI WORKSHOP AT NICKERIE

A Workshop was conducted at Nickerie for Hindi teachers on 25-26 June 2011 in which Dr. Verma explained how to make Hindi teaching interesting and focused on methodology for teaching the Hindi alphabet, on importance of language labs which interested the participants and all of them eagerly asked questions related to their practical problems.

Tuesday 28th June 2011                                                                   SANT KABIR SMRITI


Indian Cultural Centre, Paramaribo, Hindi section has organized  a programme on 'Sant Kabir Smriti' on 28th of June 2011 at Yoga Hall, ICC. On this occasion, the programme started with the welcome speech/brief introduction of Sant Kabhir Ji by Director, ICC Shri Sunil Bhalla. In this even great ideal of Sant Kabir Hindi/Vocal, music students of ICC have presented his Dohas and Bhajans. Prof. Vimlesh Kanti Verma the renowned Hindi scholar and linguist from University of Delhi, India presented his speech on this occasion and he described as a great Nirgun Sant. Dr. Narayandatt Gangarampanday a local Hindi scholar described Sant Kabir as a one of the fearless Sant who criticized the blindness of the both the religion Hindu and Islam in India. Pt. Avtar Birjanand a renowned Pandit in Suriname expressed that Kabir Vani has a good moral value and lesson for us even today. Dr. S.K. Jha, Hindi teacher of ICC identifies Kabir as a great social reformer and advocate of communal harmony in India. Mrs. Madhumtia Bose the vocal music teacher of ICC and Tabla Teacher Mr.Shailendra Madarie also presented the Kabhir Bhajan on this occasion. Following are some photographs:




Wednesday 29th June 2011                                                 A BOOK RELEASE FUNCTION
                                                                                             BY SAHITA MITRA SANSTHAN
                                                                                                  
Sahitya Mitra Sansthan of Suriname at Mata Gauri Foundation Centre, Paramaribo, released a Hindi Kavya Sangrah (Poetry collection) of local Hindi poet Mr. Devanand Seoradj on Wednesday 29th June 2011. On this occasion, vocal music students of Indian cultural centre, Paramaribo, performed a Saraswati Vandana, Hindi Geet and Bhojpuri folk songs. It was very much appreciated and witnessed by lots of people of Suriname.   Visiting Hindi Prof. Vimlesh Kanti Verma, University of Delhi, local Hindi Scholar Dr. Naraindatt Gangaram Panday, President Mata Gauri Foundation, Mr. Kushial Singh, Pt. B. Pattendin, Vice President of Mata Gauri Foundation and other local Hindi lovers were present on the occasion.  Other 150 people also attended this event. It was very much appreciated and witnessed by lots of people of Suriname.

Ms. Suchint Kaur Sodhi, Yoga teacher, conducted a workshop on Backache, Seventy-five students attended  the workshop, in which she have explained what the causes are such as symptoms and how Yoga practises can help the people in this problem.
   


Thursday 30th June 2011                                                                     YOGA SESSION


A Yoga lecture cum Session was conducted at Yoga Niketan Centre, Paramaribo by Yoga teacher Ms. Suchint Kaur Sodhi, for one hour from 6.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. wherein 60 students participated. In this session various Yoga practices like Kapalbharti, Crocodile variations, Surya Namaskar, Cobra Pose, Vakrasana, Gaumukh Asana, Uttan Manduk Asan and the basic breathing techniques were explained along with warming and stretching practices. One lecture was also given on lifestyle.
