03.01.2010 INDIAN MOVIE CLUB - BOLLYWOOD MOVIE "TAAL"

Under the India Movie Club, this month "TAAL" was screened at the local air-conditioned Theatre Paarl Movies, Suit, J.A. Pengelstraat, Paramaribo. A round 200 people watched the movie. The movie club has now become very popular among Surinamese people and is a source of family entertainment


08 & 29.01.2010 TALK ON RAMAYANA
A talk on Ramayana was delivered by Hindi Teacher of ICC, Mrs. Sandhya Sharma. Around 40 students and Pandits attended the programme. Chaupaiyan's, Ram Bhajans and Doha's were also recited. Short stories on moral values were narrated to propagate good values.


09 & 30.01.2010YOGA FOR CHILDREN AT YOGA NIKETAN

Yoga programme for the children from the age 5 to 15 was organized. The programme consisted of breathing exercise, surya namaskar, balancing asanas and twisting asanas, this would help students to enhance the vital capacity flexibility, tone up of the muscles and supple the spine. These were taught to improve their concentration, stability and sturdiness. Around 20 students attended the programme and its will be continued by Savita Bindra every thursday of the week.



9TH JANUARY, 2010 HINDI COMPETITIONS ON THE OCCASION OF WORLD
HINDI DAY 2010
Hindi Competitions were organized in District Nickerie and Saramacca, Suriname as per following details:
In connection with the World Hindi Day Celebrations, Hindi Competitions were held at Nickerie on 9th January 2010. Around 60 students & local Hindi teachers participated with full enthusiasm in different competitions in Hindi viz., Hindi Writing, Poetry Recitation, Story Telling, Essay Writing & Ramayana Ki Chaupayian. Local Member of Parliament, Mrs. Harriette Ramdien & Director, ICC, Mr. Sunil Bhalla distributed the prizes to the winners of different competitions. Local co-ordinator & Teacher of Hindi school, Mr. Chandredew Tiwari helped to organise above competitions.

10TH JANUARY, 2010 HINDI WORKSHOP AT DISTRICT NICKERIE
In connection with the World Hindi Day Celebrations, a Hindi Workshop for local Hindi teachers of District Nickerie was organised on 10th January 2010 at Mevr. Schneiders Howard School by Mrs. Sandhya Sharma, Hindi Teacher, ICC. Some lessons in Grammar were also taught with the help of charts. New techniques were introduced to make Hindi teaching effective & interesting. Practice papers of different levels for the forthcoming Hindi exam by Suriname Hindi Parishad, were also distributed to the local Hindi teacher. Some books of Hindi plays, poetry & dictionaries were also distributed


13TH JANUARY, 2010 LECTURE - CUM - DEMONSTRATION " SELF PROTECTION FOR WOMEN "
A lecture - cum - demonstration on "Self Protection for Women" was organised on Wednesday, 13th January, 2010 at Indian Cultural Centre, Yoga Hall. Mrs. Manjit Sodhi, wife of the Ambassador and members of the Diplomatic Ladies Group were among the participants.
Mr. Eric Nirk, Taekwondo expert gave lecture as well as demonstration on the Self Protection on the subject in English. He also involved the audience in demonstration; it was very well appreciated by the Diplomatic Women's and other audience. There was a question - answer session after the programme. Mrs. Sodhi also spoke on this occasion. The programme concluded with light refreshment. Following are some photographs:



16TH JANUARY, 2010 HINDI COMPETITION AT DISTRICT SARAMACCA
In connection with the World Hindi Day Celebrations, Hindi Competitions were held at Shri Krishna Mandir, 13, Mahostraat, Saramacca on 16th January 2010. Around 50 students & local Hindi teachers participated with full enthusiasm in different competitions in Hindi i.e. Hindi Writing, Poetry Recitation, Story Telling, Essay Writing & Ramayana Ki Chaupayian. Vice-President of Shri Krishna Mandir & Director, ICC, Shri Sunil Bhalla presented prizes to the II & III position holder in different competitions. Local co-ordinator & Teacher of Hindi School, Mr. Soedesh Hira helped to organise above competitions.





20.01.2010 FLAVOUR OF NORTH INDIA ( PUNJAB )
An Indian Sweet Dish "Sweet Yellow Rice" was prepared and demonstrated at the monthly cookery class organised at the Indian Cultural Centre. Around 40 ladies attended and followed the demonstration enthusiastically.





23RD JANUARY, 2010 WORLD HINDI DAY CELEBRATIONS 2010 AT THEATRE THALIA

World Hindi Day was celebrated on Saturday, 23rd January 2010 at Theatre Thalia in which various performances of Vocal Music, Dance, Tabla, Poetry Recitation, Recitation of Ramayana's Chaupayian & Yoga were given. About three hundred students & teachers from five districts of Suriname i.e. Wanica, Commewijne, Paramaribo, Nickerie and Saramacca took part in the Hindi Competitions, out of which 77 participants won prizes. Twenty-two students i.e. 1st, 2nd & 3rd position holders in Hindi exams held by Suriname Hindi Parishad in 2009 from Prathma to Kovid level were also given prizes. H.E. Maurits Hassankhan, Minister of Home Affairs was the Chief Guest on the occasion. He, along with H.E. Chandrikapersad Santhoki, Minister of Justice and Police gave the cash prizes, Hindi books & certificates to the winners. The concert was recorded and telecasted by Ramasha TV and watched by the thousands of viewers and around five hundreds peoples were present. This was well appreciated by all of them. 26.01.2010 FLAG HOSTING / RECEPTION HELD ON THE OCCASION OF THE 60Th ANNIVERSARY OF INDIA 'S REPUBLIC DAY
On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of India's Republic day, a flag hoisting function was held at the Embassy premises in the morning of 26th January 2010. Some patriotic songs were sung by the India-based staff of the Embassy / ICC and senior students of the ICC. Ambassador also read out the Message of the President of India. Light refreshments were served to the guests.
In the evening a reception was held at the Embassy Residence wherein the ICC's Music students gave a short cultural programme. The Vice - President of Suriname, Mr. Ramdien Sardjoe was the Chief Guest on the occasion. The Speaker of the National Assembly, a number of cabinet Ministers, diplomats, Members of the Parliament, Prominent businessmen were among those who attended the reception. Shri K J S Sodhi, Ambassador of India, in his address, greeted the members of Indian community and friends of India. The Vice - President of Suriname, in his address, congratulated the people and the Government of India. Around 350 peoples attended the function, which was followed by dinner. 28.01.2010 TABLA WORKSHOP ON ' TAAL SYSTEM '
The Tabla workshop on 'Taal System' was held on 28th January 2010. In this workshop, I taught some of the key points regarding the Indian classical taal such as: matras, tali, khali, vibhag and theka. Also the definitions of taal, laya and matra. Three main divisions of the laya (tempo) were taught: Vilambit, Madhya and Drut. The taal lipi of the North Indian classical music was taught. The students had to write some of their lessons in the pure taal system. A brief introduction of the 5 jatis was also taught.
