01.02.2010  EXAMINATION FOR COUNCILLORS FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION

Examination for counsellors on the topic "suicide prevention" was conducted under the supervision of Yoga Teacher on Monday 1st February 2010 at 1900 to 2100hrs. The examination paper was prepared on the basis of yoga philosophy of disturbances of mind and control, klesh, ignorance and modern psychology of mind. Main focus was to unblock the mind by understanding the truth of nature and life.

02, 09, 18 & 23.02.2010   MANDUKYA UPANISHAD

Classes on Mandukya Upanishad were conducted on 2nd, 9th, 18th 23rd, February 2010 at Veldhuizenlaan no 44. M?nd?kya Upanishad is the shortest of the Upanishads and is in prose, consisting of twelve verses expounding the mystic syllable Aum, the three psychological states of waking, dreaming and sleeping, and the transcendent fourth state of illumination. The concepts of Om and Hiranyagarbha, Jagrat, Swapna and Susupti Avastha were explained along with their relation to the body and nature. One who learns this can go for the Turiyatetta Awastha, which is highest in the meditation in yoga also. In continuation, the chanting of Om with relation to human body and Nature were also taught.

03.03.2010   VASANT - UTSAV (A SHORT CULTURAL PROGRAMME)
                   PRIZE DISTRIBUTION OF 2ND & 3RD POSITION IN HINDI COMPETITION

On the occasion of Vasant - Utsav, a cultural programme was held on Wednesday 3rd Feb., 2010 in which performances of vocal music, dance, Hindi skit and table were presented.  During the course of the programme, the winners of 2nd and 3rd positions in Hindi competition were also given prizes.  Mr. Stanley Sadoel, Director, Department of Culture was the Chief Guest on the occasion. He, along with Shri KJS Sodhi, Ambassador of India gave away cash prizes, Hindi books & certificate to the winners. 250 (Two hundreds and fifty) people along with distinguished guests attended the programme. The programme was well received by the audience and followed by light refreshment. Appended below are few photographs:  








07.02.2010  MOVIE CLUB - BOLLYWOOD MOVIE   "HUM SAATH SAATH HAIN"
Under the Indian Movie Club, this month "HUM SAATH SAATH HAIN" was screened at the local air-conditioned Theatre Paarl Movies, Suit, J.A. Pengelstraat, Paramaribo. Around 200 people watched the movie. The movie club has now become very popular among Surinamese people and is a source of family entertainment













09 & 18.02.2010     PRANAYAMA WORKSHOP FOR CHILDREN AT YOGA NIKETAN
A workshop on Pranayama for children of the age of 8-15 years was conducted by Yoga Teacher at Yoga Niketan on Tuesday 9th and 18th February 2010. The techniques of yogic breathing, kapalbhati, Anuloma - Veloma, Ujjai Pranayama were taught. At same time the Asanas which can be done with the help of inhalation and exhalation were also explained.  


11.02.2010   OPENING OF MIND CONSOLE CENTRE & CERTIFICATE  DISTRIBUTION

Mr. K J S Sodhi, Ambassador of India, Dr. Vidia Punwasi, Chairman Stichting Swarnapath, Dr. R. Dwarkasingh, Chairman Commission for Suicide Prevention, Dr. L. Resida, Director of the Bureau of Public Health, Dr. M. Eersel, Director of the Ministry of Health and Director, ICC graced the Certificates distribution function for the programme: Yoga and Meditation for suicide Prevention.
 The programme was conducted in collaboration with Ministry of Health, NGO - Stichting Swarnapath and ICC. Mr. Prahalad Singh Chahar, Yoga teacher, ICC gave special training to 40 students (mainly doctors) for this very special and relevant cause "Yoga Meditation for Suicide Prevention".  
On this occasion, a representative of the Minister of Health, Ambassador of India and Director, ICC distributed the Certificates to the successful candidates and congratulated   them.  The function was attended by 75 people and Swarnapath inaugurated their new building on the occasion. The function was followed by light refreshment.



13.02.2010     MUSIC WORKSHOP AT DISTRICT NICKERIE

In connection with Holi Phagwa celebration at Nickerie on 20th February 2010, a Music Workshop was organised in Gayatri Ashram on 13th February 2010. Some Sargam lessons (basic) were taught and two folk songs on Holi in Hindi were also taught for the forthcoming Holi Festival.



15.02.2010       INSTRUMENTAL WORKSHOP ON TABLA

The Tabla workshop" an Introduction to Tabla" was held on 15 February 2010. In the workshop a brief introduction was given about the Tabla. A documentary video was shown to the audience how Tabla is made from the beginning, cutting the wood, preparing it, how the Tabla skin is made, the "gab" or Masala, and the final tuning. Also an introduction to the Indian Tabla system was given with demonstration on Tabla by the ICC students. At the end some video clips of live Tabla performance of Pt. Kishan Maharaj, Ustaad Tari Khan and Ustaad Zakir Hussain were shown to the public, which they enjoyed very much.  



17.02.2010     FLAVOURS OF INDIA  - "Besan Ka Pura"

         An Indian Dish "Besan Ka Pura" was prepared and demonstrated at the monthly cookery class organised at the Indian Cultural Centre. Around 40 ladies attended and followed the demonstration enthusiastically.




17.02.2010   YOGA SUKSHAM VIYAYAM

Yoga Suksham Viyayama and Meditation workshop was conducted by Yoga teacher at Sanatan Dharm Mandir, North Paramaribo for the local people. In the workshop different techniques of Yogic Suksham Viyayam and the practice of Meditation were taught. The number of participants was 38. The Suksham Viyayam, a new concept of yoga, was taught for the first time to them and it was well appreciated by the group.      


20.02.2010 HOLI/ PHAGWA CULTURAL SHOW

  The Indian Cultural Centre had a lively cultural show in Nickerie Cultural Centre on Saturday, 20th February 2010 in connection with the Holi/ Phagwa Festival. Almost 800 people witnessed it as live audience. The show was organised at the request of local MP, Mrs. Harriett Ramdien. The show included singing, dances and music rendition. The students of the ICC gave a terrific show with a combination of Hori Thumri (semi-classical), folk songs, folk dance, classical dance and Bollywood song. The Shri Rajiv Walia - a singer from India, sang songs at the request of the Public. The students of Gayatri Ashram also contributed with a performance of Phagwa songs and one folk dance on Holi.





24.02.2010    PROGRAMME IN TYLE TYLE HANDICAP SCHOOL


Two dance performances have been given by the ICC student in Tyle Tyle Handicap School, Paramaribo on 24th February, 2010 at 5.00 p.m. Four ICC students have participated in two different dance performances on a cultural eve for handicap kids. 75 peoples attended the programme.

24.02.2010   A TV PROGRAMME ON PHAGWA/ HOLI FESTIVAL


Indian Cultural Centre students and teachers participated in a short TV production on the occasion of Phagwa/ Holi celebrations. It consisted of Audio track containing four songs on Holi, which where recorded in a studio and the video recording / shooting was made in our Yoga Hall, ICC. The programme was telecast / broadcast on 28th February and 1st March, 2010 on the occasion of Phagwa by various TV and Radio channels.  
 

25.02.2010  WORKSHOP ON BASIC MEDITATION

The Workshop on Basics of meditation was conducted at ICC yoga Hall on 25th February 2010. Under the workshop the basic techniques of meditation were taught to the people which can help one to manage day to day stressful life; remain calm and quite and be rejuvenated.


25.02.2010  TV PRODUCTION FOR PHAGWA

       A TV production has also been prepared in collaboration with local Ramasha TV on the occasion of the Phagwa/ Holi. Senior dance & table students and teachers of ICC presented few items in the studio of the TV channel. The programme was telecast on TV Channel on 28th February and 1st March 2010, on the occasion of Phagwa, and was very well received by the viewers.    


26.02.2010   A CRAFT WORKSHOP ON "BEST OUT OF WASTE MATERIAL"


A Craft Workshop on Best Out of Waste Material was conducted by Mrs. Wasim Zaidi, at the Indian Cultural Centre. Various things such as pen stand, wall hangings, cards, gift boxes and coasters were made out of the waste materials like Ice cream sticks, dry leaves seeds, old cards, ribbon, laces, mirror, cardboard, boxes, hand made sheets etc .
Around 40 ladies attended and followed the demonstration. Following are some photographs:




27.02.2010      COLOUR YOUR LIFE - WORKSHOP ON DRAWING AND PAINTING
        

On the occasion of the Phagwa/ Holi, Embassy of India and Indian Cultural Centre  organized a programme "Colour your Life" : a workshop on Drawing and Painting which was conducted by Ranjan Akloe, a famous painter of Suriname.  60 local students participated along with their parents. They painted T-Shirts on the spot under the supervision of painter.   Projection of a power point programme was also conducted by Mr. Ranjan Akloe. The programme was followed by light refreshment for the participants.



28.02.2010                   THE NATIONAL MEDITATION AND REALIZATION DAY


The National Meditation and Realization Day was commemorated by the local organization Jagran Mandal Suriname at the Independence Square on  28 February, 2010 and a large number of social and ethnic groups participated. Various techniques of Asnas, breathing, mind rejuvenation, value of essence sticks (Agarbatti) and meditation were taught.  The programme was organized with the help of ICC and was well appreciated by the participants.
